The Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame is the official Hall of Fame for Tejano Music as designated by House Bill 1019 and signed into law by Governor Rick Perry of the Great State of Texas on May 3, 2001. The Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Museum is situated at 213 N. Wright Street in Alice, Texas, the Birthplace of Tejano. ALICE, TEXAS THE BIRTHPLACE OF TEJANO Alice has long been recognized as “The Birthplace of Tejano” dating back to the mid 1940’s when Armando Marroquin, Sr. of Alice and partner Paco Bentacourt of San Benito, Texas launched what was to be the first home based recording company to record Tejano artists exclusively. Ideal Records, which was based in Alice, the heart of South Texas and under the direction of Marroquin became the perfect vehicle for Tejano groups and artists to get their music to the public. Marroquin, who also owned and operated a jukebox company, insured that Ideal recordings would be distributed throughout South Texas. The songs recorded, which were contributed by Tejano and Mexican composers became very popular through jukeboxes placed in restaurants, cantinas or any other establishment that would have them, and the then very scarce Spanish language radio programs.
My name is Reuben Lopez and I am the newly elected President of Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame
Museum. My parents are Ted
and Esmeralda Lopez. I am married to Maricela
and have two sons Reuben Lopez II and Jon Lucas. I believe our goal as an organization is to promote Tejano Music and all those involved in it and to recognize their contributions to the industry. We will strive to have a good repoire with the community and city leaders. I am eager to begin the duties of the President of this organization. First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed and participated – past and present – in helping to honor Tejano Music and all the individuals involved in it. I know that it takes more than one individual to make an organization successful. It is a team effort. All suggestions and comments will be considered in any and all decisions made. I look forward to working closely with all the Board of the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame Museum and all its members.
